Learn to Read is a five-year project funded by USAID with cost share from Save the Children Hong Kong (SCHK) implemented from 2018 to 2023 with a possible extension to August 2025. The Activity focuses on improving the reading skills of children in pre-primary, grade 1, and grade 2 in Lao PDR, with particular attention to non-Lao-speaking children and children with disabilities. The Activity works closely with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and development partners to strengthen the Lao education system by providing high-quality supplemental materials, teacher training, and teacher support, community engagement for reading, and inclusive education initiatives for non-Lao speakers and children with disabilities. The Activity is implemented by a consortium led by Save the Children (SC) in partnership with Room to Read (RtR) and Humanity & Inclusion (HI).

Dashboard Objectives

Learn to Read Dashboard aims to provide comprehensive insights into various aspects of schools. It will categorize schools into those with pre-primary programs, those without pre-primary programs, and stand-alone KG3 schools, with these schools nested within districts and districts within provinces, all mapped using coordinates. The dashboard will detail grade levels within schools, including pre-primary, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3, and show enrollment figures disaggregated by gender for each grade. It will also indicate whether a school operates as a multigrade institution and provide the number of teachers by gender for pre-primary, grade 1, and grade 2 or lower primary levels. Additionally, the dashboard will summarize classroom observations conducted by DESB, principals, and POs by school and grade, with this information aggregated by district, province, and project. Finally, it will display the proportion of teachers meeting specified teaching instruction quality benchmarks from the classroom observation tool, disaggregated by grade level and geographical region.
